Mayor Campana made the official announcement on Friday January 22nd, 2010, but Deputy Fire Chief Irv Gleason was the catalyst for rescinding the layoffs of two city firefighters. Sunday was to have been the last day of work for J.J. Lyons and Ken Smith, but that all changed with Deputy Chief Gleason's decision to retire. Gleason's retirement will result in about $53,000 in savings for the city, which was enough to make it unnecessary to furlough the two firefighters according to Mayor Campana. The Williamsport Firefighters would like to thank all of the support that we received from the citizens of Williamsport throughout these trying times.
